As you listen to your kids read each night, point out what they are doing well, and choose one area to focus on and possibly model. Kids need to know what fluent reading is:
Fluent Reading is…
1. Reading smoothly and easily.
2. Noticing punctuation marks. (. ! ? , “ “ )
3. Grouping words in phrases that make sense.
4. Reading with expression.
Modeling-Model for your children what fluent reading looks, sounds, and feels like. Be sure to use #1-4 above!
Rereading-Have students practice reading their favorite story several times to encourage them to use expression while reading familiar text that they enjoy.
Choral Reading-Read aloud simultaneously with your children. Have them mimic your voice.
Poetry-Read poetry books together. Encourage your child to find one to practice and "perform" (for the family, or even at school).
